Donald Pippin's Pocket Opera of San Francisco and Notre Dame de Namur
University have joined forces to create “Pocket Opera at Notre
Dame,” a structured training program for young opera singers, music directors, and vocal
coach/accompanists. The tiered performance program works in conjunction with the NDNU Department of Music and Vocal Arts graduate and undergraduate degrees in Vocal Performance. The levels include the “Pocket Opera Studio,” an
apprentice program for advanced singers, and the “Pippin
Opera Workshop,” a training opportunity for less experienced
vocalists. NDNU students receive voice and speech training and coaching, and workshops in acting and dance in addition to their traditional musical training.
"POND" singers rehearse
and perform in a true apprenticeship with Pocket Opera’s professionals on the
NDNU campus, at the Florence Gould Theatre in San Francisco and at the historic
Napa Valley Opera House. Students provide performance skills to the company and receive academic credit for their work as part of their
curriculum for graduation.
Students audition for admission to the program throughout the year, and audition again in early fall for
roles in the upcoming season.
